A few years ago, every once in a while, I would get asked to recommend computer parts or even build someone a complete system. This was back when computers were expensive and doing it yourself could save you a couple of hundred dollars or more. Not anymore. Dell and other computer manufacturers have shaved their margins so thin that they basically just make money off of warranties and tech support. This is still good news for anyone who wants to buy a new computer, but it makes my system building guide a little obsolete. I used to specialize in "value" systems, because I was a starving college student and had to save money wherever I could. Now that I have a job I can splurge a little and go for stuff that I don't absolutely need, but hey, it's cool and I love cool stuff. ;)
So now the focus of my system building guide has changed. Basically, if you're not a gamer, you can stop right here. Just go and buy yourself a laptop because they're much more convenient and nowadays can pretty much handle any normal, everyday task without being slow or unresponsive. Otherwise, heed the following warning:
This page will serve as an evolving menu for my personal choice of parts - what I would get if I were building myself a new computer, not grandma or anyone else. These are only suggestions for the semi-experienced computer user, as no explanations will be given. Alternative sources for this type of thing can be found here. Tips for beginners on what to look for in computer parts can look here. Those looking for a new computer and don't want to do it themselves should visit Dell.
I also keep some pages updated with my current computer setup: Laptop - Last updated 2006.05.09. Desktop - Last updated 2004.09.10.
And now, the Gaming Box. I'm using NewEgg for prices, as I've had good experiences with them in the past.
