2005.01.02 - Happy New Years, I'm not dead

So yesterday I was driving north on I-80 from Oakland airport (where I had just picked up Laura) to Davis, going about 70mph in the far left lane, when some jackass in a minivan started to drift into my lane. Wait, maybe I had better back up a little bit. New Year's at Aaron's was awesome - lots of people there, cool band, gambling, open bar, lots of drunk antics, the works, but it would have been a lot better if a) Laura had been there, and b) I wasn't sick with the flu. Since I wasn't feeling too well, I left a little early, went home, and tried to get some sleep. The next morning I was still kinda achy and out of it, so it wasn't really a good idea for me to drive in the first place.
Anyway, when the minivan started to come into my lane, I wasn't really all there, so my reflex reaction was 1) delayed, and 2) too strong. I swerved away from the minivan, instead of just hitting the breaks and trying to get behind it. Well, since it had just rained, the road was kinda slick, and I lost traction. The car fishtailed a few times as I tried to countersteer and stay in my lane, because I didn't want to hit any other cars, but eventually the fishtailing went out of control and we spun into the shoulder and hit the center divider almost head on. Luckily I had started breaking immediately after the swerve and we only hit it going about 15 miles an hour. After we hit, the car started to spin back into the road, but I steered into the turn to make the car do a full 360 degree spin, so we weren't facing oncoming traffic. Thankfully, all the cars behind us must have seen us start to fishtail and stepped on their brakes, because no one passed us or crashed into us or caused the people behind them to crash into them. One car pulled up next to us and asked if we were okay, and we told them we were, so they took off, and traffic went on. We pulled off onto the shoulder, did a sanity check to make sure we really were okay, checked the car, realized it was still drivable, and proceded to the nearest exit, which was in Vallejo. Laura and I only got some minor whiplash, and the front end of the car was crumpled but sustained no internal damage (trusty '87 Oldsmobile). Overall, we were very lucky because it could have been a lot worse. All of you out there, drive safe and be alert. Thanks.

2004.09.20 - I'm learning Flash

Well one of the nice things about being employed is that the company pays for me to learn new "skills", so now I'm taking a class at the local community college in Flash, cuz I'm just too lazy to teach myself otherwise. Just for laughs, and to show everyone what a supremely talented artiste I am, I'll link to a couple of my homework assignments so far.
Homework 3 - Remind you of anyone?
Homework 2 - Chomp chomp

2004.07.19 - Beware the white flag...

... of war! Muwahahah. </dumb inside joke>

2004.05.24 - I have a job

I'm now working for CCI as a web applications developer. Perl, SQL, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and CGI, oh joy!

2004.03.04 - Breaking news

Laura is the cutest. :D

2003.12.26 - Holiday ramblings

This update is brought to you by request from Laura's Mom, who reads this site why? I have no idea, it's really boring. Well anyway, another year of my life has gone by, I'm now 23 years old and wow does that sound old when I write it down. But I suppose Laura's Mom will disagree with me on that one. Christmas and Hanukkah have also come and gone, now there's New Years to look forward to, but after that? Hmm, my 2004 New Year's resolutions might have to include finally get a job and stop mooching off my parents. Not that playing Diablo II for eight hours a day isn't a job already, it's just that earning $.20 an hour selling my items on ebay isn't exactly making me healthy, wealthy, and wise. I'm looking into doing one of those teaching-english-in-a-foreign country jobs, like Japan, which according to James is the best thing since sliced sushi. If that pans out, who knows, maybe my next update will be in Japanese. :)

2003.09.21 - Life after college

Hmm, well school is over and I've officially graduated from college, except I still have to wait four months for my diploma (what's up with that UC Davis?). And I'm still trying to find a job so I don't have to live at home (sorry mom and dad).
Oh yeah, my trip down undah was great, I wish I had more pictures though. Maybe I'll post some later. Here's a brief overview of my trip:
I arrived in Sydney at 7am and caught a shuttle to my backpacker hostel, a crappy, run-down place named Boomerang Backpackers (avoid it if you go there, there are better places), and spent the whole day exploring the city. I walked around the Botanical Gardens and saw the Opera House, went around the harbor to The Rocks (old-town market area), spent some more time walking around, ate dinner at this really nice sushi restaurant overlooking the harbor, and went back to my hostel to sleep.
The next day I flew to Rockhampton, which is in Queensland on the east side of Australia, and took a ferry to Great Keppel Island, where I would spend the next week at the Contiki resort there. I went scuba diving almost every day and met a lot of cool people (birds and blokes?), most of them from Melbourne trying to escape the winter cold, did some partying and relaxing and just had a ton of fun.
After that, I pretty much spent most of the next week camping out in the desert near Alice Springs, which is smack in the middle of the continent. I did an outback tour with Adventure Tours Australia of Uluru and King's Canyon, which was spectacular, then went back to Sydney.
From there I caught the train to the Blue Mountains and visited my cousin Julie. I did some abseiling in the Blue Mountains, which are really beautiful, before finally catching my plane back to San Francisco.
So it was a pretty hectic three weeks, and I wish I could have stayed twice as long, but overall it was a great experience. I'll definately go back someday, I still have to see Perth, Melbourne, and the Great Barrier Reef... and maybe some kangaroo or koalas... all I saw on my outback "adventure" were a couple of stupid wild camels.
Oh, I also should mention how much I enjoyed traveling alone. There's no waiting for anyone, no going to places you don't want to go to, nothing holding you back from doing what you want to do... ahh, it's just so much better.
Okay then, I suppose that's all for now, maybe I'll post again in another couple months. :P Thanks for reading :)

2003.07.09 - Summer vacation

I really shouldn't let so much time elapse between updates, because so much stuff happens in between that I'd have to write a novel to explain it all, and no one wants to read that, so I have to write these short little blurbs instead. Oh well.
To be brief: I graduated from college in June. Well not technically. I still have to take one more class in the summer before I get my degree. Anyway, then I went to Europe with my family. We spent three days in London, two days biking in the English countryside near Stratford-upon-Avon, flew to Brussels, Belgium, spent three days there, spent a couple days driving through The Netherlands (Rotterdam, The Hague, and Amsterdam), and then made our way back to London for our return flight. It was fun, but tiring; maybe I'll post some pictures later. Right now I'm on a week-long break planning my trip to Australia, which starts on the 16th. I'll be gone until August 3rd, upon which I must return for the dreaded summer school. I have no idea what I'm going to do in Australia except scuba dive (a lot) and explore the outback, so my chances of either getting eaten by sharks or bitten by poisonous snakes is pretty good. :P Should I survive the journey, I will promptly update this webpage with tales of my (mis)adventures. So until then, g'day mates. :)

2003.03.21 - Spring is here at last

Well I'm finally done with my last god-awful winter quarter. Only one more quarter and a summer class and I'll be done with school. It's kind of strange when I think about being done with school for good (until grad school at least)... it's all I've been doing my whole life... what the hell am I going to do after that? It would be nice if I could take some time off before starting work to travel and goof off, but herein lies the rub - I can't travel without money and I can't get money if I'm traveling. So it would appear that I am screwed, however I'm not going to think about it until I am actually screwed for sure. Until then I will just be blissfully ignorant of the real world and hope to win the lottery.
The next school quarter has potential to be interesting. I'll be taking a graphics class that I've been wanting to take forever, and a Japanese popular culture class where I get to watch lots of Japanese movies and anime - something I do anyway, so I might as well get graded for it. Then I'll have soccer in the mornings which is always nice, and spring weather will make me have happy feet. Yes, all is good in the neighborhood, and give me a break for this writing, it's 7am and I've been up all night. :D

2003.01.28 - Give me a break

No wait, a break only implies temporary relief. I need a 3 month vacation, at least. Summer, hurry the hell up and get here already! I don't want to worry about graduation anymore. I don't want to have to sleep through boring lectures. I don't want to have to do anything except wake up around noon, browse the internet for a couple hours while I eat breakfast, play a few video games, and then get down to business - with all the lovely little projects I want to work on.
Unfortunately, I can't do that. I'm at risk of not graduating in the spring, school is boring, and I have zero free time for projects. But at least I should look on the bright side right? I'm healthy, I get to play indoor soccer twice a week, and... well that's it really. God I hate winter quarter.

2002.12.15 - Winter break

Joy! I've survived another quarter of school, and can now kick back and relax for a whole two weeks before returning to the agony and despair that is Winter in Davis. It's not that I don't enjoy being in college and living on my own and all, but sometimes you just need better weather. At times, I've wondered if I'd have been better off going to the University of Hawaii or maybe UC San Diego. Or at least Colorado University, so I could snowboard. Rainy/drizzly weather for three months straight is not my idea of a good time. It should at least snow or something.
But enough complaining, I'm still glad to be done with school for a little while at least. I'll finally have some spare time to work on my various projects. The four-player arcade is done, I just need to take some pictures and put them up. Maybe I'll do a little writeup about it and put that in the articles section. I've also been meaning to put together a small dedicated server for filesharing and stuff. Hmm, there's more, but I probably won't have time to get around to it. Oh well, the list is neverending anyway.

2002.10.24 - And by soon, I meant next month

Well, in my usual slacker manner, I have neglected to update this site with my pointless personal news for some time now. But fear not, I plan on remedying that issue... right... now! :P Ahem. So, I guess I should point out that I now own and control the domain kouri.org. yehweb.com has been gracious enough to offer to host my puny, 3.5MB website, for the no-money-down, zero APR fee of merely $15 per year! Isn't that lovely? No more stupid CJB.net popups! For those of you who happen to like popups and perhaps Gator, kouri.cjb.net will still work for the time being. Why would you ever want to do that? I don't know, maybe you really like Gator, and you really do want them to have access to all your credit card/personal information. :P
I meant to post something a few months ago telling about my summer, what I did, where I went, etc, but it just seemed like too much work at the time. Now it still seems like a lot of work, but I'll try to just do this and get it over with:
Mid July: Went to Vancouver, Canada with my family for a wedding. Very nice place, except for the loony Canucks everywhere. :)
Late July: Went to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico with my family. Did some scuba diving and drank a lot of margaritas.
Early August: Went to DefCon 10 in Las Vegas with a bunch of people I met through TI calculator programming, and had a great time. Got back just in time for summer school. :(
Late August: Took a break from school to go river rafting on the American River with my family. Not too exciting, those class 3 rapids.
Mid September: Finished summer school. Went to Rosarito, Mexico with my roommates for a 21st birthday party. Unfortunately, the entire city was empty when we got there. Still had fun.
Late September: Started school again. Taking three classes: Circuits II (again), Digital Systems, and Networks. Lots of work, lots of fun, no free time. And I'm still working for Card2Net. :P
I think that catches me up. I'll post again when I have something really important to say, like when I actually get this damn arcade machine working. Laters.

2002.09.30 - No, I'm not dead

Just back in school and really busy. A real update will come soon, I promise.

2002.06.26 - Summer update

Hrm, it's been a while, guess I should update this thing. Well I'm done with my 3rd year of college. This is probably the time where I should be thinking about my future and all that responsibility stuff huh? Nah. :) I've got this summer planned out pretty well and that's about as far as I'll let myself go. So what's on the agenda? Work first. I've got a little programming job for a company called Card2Net Inc. to do, then I'm going to Canada and then Mexico with my family for a bit. After that, back to school. I'm taking two summer classes, Circuits II and U.S. History 1914-1945. It's hard to tell if they're going to be tough or not. I think I'll still have plenty of free time to work on my various projects. The 4-player arcade machine is done, btw. I just need to get a dedicated computer and monitor for it. I'll try to throw together a page with some pictures of it later on. Okay, I'm rambling now. Until next time...

2002.04.08 - CalcText Online

Due to inspiration from Guillaume Renard, I have created an online version of CalcText in PHP. I hope this will be useful to all the TxtView users who don't like using command-line programs.

2002.04.02 - Spring quarter starts

Spring break was a blast. I got to relax, kick back, and do some extreme sports. I met up with my friend Tom from Hawaii and we went snowboarding Thursday and then skydiving Friday. It's kind of a bummer having to go back to school (I spent an hour waiting in line at the bookstore today, ugh), and I doesn't help that I'm busy as hell. I'm currently taking 5 classes: Algorithms, Compilers, Software Engineering, Econ, and Woodshop - it's a pretty heavy load, even though woodshop doesn't count. I get even lazier (if that's possible) during Spring quarter so I might have to drop Econ, but we'll see.

2002.02.22 - Small updates 2

What Is My Angle? released. Resume page updated (yes again). Got rid of the stupid forum.

2002.02.15 - Small updates

Hardware and resume pages have been updated.

2002.01.30 - Winter Wonderland

Well for the first time since I've lived in Davis, it snowed the other day. Not a lot, just for about two hours. But it was really something to see so many college students up at 8am running around in the snow and yelling like little kids (including me), instead of being hung over or sleeping in. Hopefully a freak blizzard will force school to be canceled next week so I won't have to take my three midterms. :)
In other news, I am an idiot and cracked the core of my 1.13GHz AMD Thunderbird processor while attempting to remove the heatsink-fan unit. At least now I have the most expensive keychain out of all my friends. Luckily I had a spare 900MHz Duron to back it up, so I still have a computer. I also bought a burner because I got tired of bumming cds off my roommates. The hardware pages have been updated accordingly.

2002.01.09 - Happy New Year!

Wow, winter break went by so fast and now I'm back in school again. Kinda depressing. Well I can't think of that now. I keep myself busy by putting together computers for myself and my family. Because of this, I redid the hardware page to show off my new computer and I also added a Recommended PC Buyers Guide, kind of like what they have at Ars Technica. It's pretty plain right now, but I plan on keeping it updated every few weeks maybe. School is going to be rough this quarter. I'm taking Programming Languages, Algorithms, and two Japanese history classes. The fun never ends. :P

2001.11.27 - Post-Thanksgiving blues

Time for a small update I guess. My Thanksgiving break is over and it's time to go back to school. If I can just make it through the next couple weeks and finals it'll be a sweet winter for me. I've got several unfinished projects that I really want to work on, like building computers and a water-cooling tower, some programming stuff, and an arcade machine cabinet with a dedicated emulator inside.
So what's on my Christmas/Hanukah wishlist this year? All I really want is some free time to do what I want to do and hang out with friends and family. Of course, a new snowboard would be nice too. And a paintball gun. And an nForce motherboard with an Athlon 1900+ processor. That would be schweet. :D

2001.09.18 - Summer's end

Well it's been a long time with no updates. Too much stuff has been going on lately, which is a good thing, so I'll just quickly give a brief overview of how things went:
July - I went to Honolulu, Hawaii and stayed with my good buddy Thomas for two weeks. From over-exposure to extreme amounts of fun and McDonalds, we thought it would be a good idea to jump out of a plane at 13,000 feet, which we did, and quite enjoyed it.
Mid-July - I went to Montreal, Quebec City, Boston, and New York City with my family. Canada is a beautiful place, so much cleaner and more organized than the US. Not necessarily better, just different. I had a lot of fun mountain-biking in Quebec. Boston was cool, we stayed on a boat in the harbor and had to walk everywhere, which wasn't too fun, but it was an experience. NYC was just awesome. We stayed with my cousin Nathan at his flat near the Empire State Building. Took a tour of Manhattan by ferry, which was really cool. Walked around Central Park with Kat. Hung out in Times Square and went shopping in SoHo. I've never seen so many people in one place before. I think I could definately get used to living there.
August - Started summer school in Davis. Probability theory es muy divertido! Not really actually.
September 11 - Absolute insanity. Thousands of innocent people wiped out in a few hours by just a few madmen. I can't believe I was just there two months ago. Thank god my own family is safe. Unfortunately, many others are not.

And sometime inbetween all that I was working a summer job which I'm not sure if I can reveal just yet. All in all, it was a great summer and it's a real bummer it's coming to an end. Fall quarter starts on the 24th, and is going to be a lot of work. I'll be taking three upper-division CS classes and a history class. Hope I can handle it.
I've made a few updates to random parts of the site. Hardware page has a few changes. A few new links. Slight update on the resume. I even optimized some of the routines I made in the getKey tutorial I wrote years ago. Guess I was really bored. Well, until next time...

2001.05.14 - Being busy

I had one midterm last week and I've got two this week and one next week. Yes, midterms. School doesn't get out til mid/end of June for me. :(
Also, I'll be in LA this weekend for E3 hanging out with Justin and Hideaki and maybe Mikel and Soy too.
Meanwhile, the job hunting continues...

2001.04.28 - /me needs a job

I changed my resume a little in the hope that I can get a job this summer. I need one so I can satisfy my craving for new hardware. What I want to do is get one of those new motherboards with the AMD 761 chipset (266MHz DDR RAM support), 256MB of PC2100 CAS-2 RAM, and a screaming 1.2GHz T-Bird. :) OK so maybe I won't get all that. But AMD is definately the way to go. A Duron 750 could hit 1GHz pretty easily with a little coaxing.

2001.04.02 - Spring is here

Updated my schedule to reflect the new spring quarter. The break was pretty good. I learned some stuff about car repair. Hopefull I'll find some time to program this week, provided I can tear myself away from playing Diablo 2. :P Yeah, that's about it.

2001.03.08 - Forum

Oh my god, MyComputer.com killed my guestbook! Yoouuuu bastards! Ah well, it wasn't doing so good anyway. But, because I have a lot of time on my hands (finals are coming up, so it's dead week), I set up a messageboard/forum type thing generously provided by CJB.net. Feel free to post whatever, but if I don't like it, I'll delete it! Haha, just kidding! Sort of...
Let's see, I've also made some minor updates to the rest of the site. For example, the section that used to be called Programs is now called Software. And I updated the hardware page cuz I bought some new heatsinks from Thermaltake. And there are more links. Check em out.

2001.02.25 - What you say?

Two updates within a month of each other? Inconceivable! Ahem. Sorry, I stayed up all night... again. I'm a little tired. Anyway, I just finished my hardware page. It's a list of all the computer parts I'm using right now, with links to the manufacturers' web sites, and my opinion on some of them. It's like my own little review site, except I can't review anything new until I upgrade my computer, which isn't gonna happen that often unless I get a J-O-B. :P But I dunno, maybe someone will find it useful or interesting. Or at least you can e-mail me and tell me what a weak system I have. Nyah nyah nyah and all that. OK, I really need some sleep now.

2001.02.23 - Site updates

I finally got around to posting a resume. I don't need that silly "About" page anymore. So um, go check it out, unless you're not going to give me a job, in which case, don't check it out. :) Also I rearranged the links page. Hasta luego.

2001.01.05 - Happy New Year!

I hope your winter break was as good as mine. And if you're still on break, then hey, more power to you. It's a bummer having to go back to school after partying for six days straight in Tahoe, but like they say, all good things must come to an end. Stupid pessimists.
I actually found a little time to program during the break. Not a lot, just a little. I made a math program for the TI-82 that I wish I had last quarter, cuz I needed it for a class then, but oh well. It puts a matrix into reduced row echelon form. You can get it here or on the programs page. Enjoy!

2000.11.28 - Another month gone by, nothing to show for it

Well that pretty much sums everything up. I had a nice Thanksgiving, how bout you? Lately I've had so much homework and stuff, it's a real bummer. But I guess that's what I'm in college for huh? :P School's going okay, finals are coming up soon. I need to finish up this physics homework, start and finish my math homework, and read a couple books for Native American studies cuz I have an essay due on Thursday. I would have liked to put up another programming contest at the Void, but I don't think that'll happen until at least this weekend. Oh, and one more semi-random thought: I met up with Justin and Hideaki last weekend, their color gameboy game is looking awesome! Great job guys!
Well that's it for this month. Abayo <so long>.

2000.10.22 - Hi

I haven't touched this site in ages, and yet people still visit. It amazes me. Well, I felt bad that I've been such a slacker, so I decided to update a little. Hopefully I'll be able to add that DHTML menu next week after my midterms and stuff. I'd write more but I don't want to bore you. :)

2000.07.30 - No news

I just wanted to put something here for the month of July, sort of a marker if you will. This month was quite a month. At least, I think it would be, if I could remember it. I can't seem to recall having done anything at all, and I'm not sure if that's a good sign or not. Anyway, this site is looking quite awful, to me at least, so I'm thinking of sprucing it up a bit, maybe with some DHTML or something. I'm also going to try and get a resume up soon, just for kicks.

2000.06.17 - Summer!

Woohoo, no more homework, no more books, no more teachers, dirty looks! Er, or something like that. Anyway, I am finally done with school! How it went so fast, I'll never know. So now that school has ended, that means I can goof off, right? Wrong! It's time to get off my lazy ass and find a real job dammit! Hmm, anyone want to hire me to do nothing for them? I'm really good at it. :) No? Awww, I guess I'll just have to go back to working on K-Edit again. :)

2000.06.04 - K-Base ported

Just got done with the 83(+) port. You can get it on the programs page.

2000.05.29 - K-Base released

For lack of a better name, I just decided to call my number base converter "K-Base" and release it for the TI-82. You can get it on he programs page. I'll try to get around to porting it to the 83(+) in the next couple of days.

2000.05.27 - New side project

Well since I don't really have a whole lot of free time, I decided to work on a very simple program so that I'll actually finish something. K-Edit will have to wait until this summer. I'm going to try to make a nice little base converter. It will probably only do decimal<->hex<->binary<->octal and it will have an interface that will display the conversions as you type the number. I'm going to start working on it right now.
Oh yeah, I don't want to disgrace myself, so I'm not going to put my Frogger game on the programs page. Let's just say that it's unlikely I'll get any extra credit for that project. Ah well. :)

2000.05.20 - 1000 lost souls pass by this site

Yeah, I know this is really measly news, but I haven't been doing anything productive for about a month now. :) Well actually I'm working on a game for my programming class. It's a frogger clone. I'll put it on the programs page when I'm done with it.

2000.05.08 - Programming contest at void.calc.org

Please go to http://void.calc.org/ and check out the Z80 programming contest we're having. We need more entries!

2000.04.18 - Swedish TxtView fonts

Thanks to Saka, fonts that have been remapped to work for Swedish keyboards have been released. To use them, you'll have to recompile TxtView using the new fonts instead of the old ones. If you don't know how to do this, just e-mail me and I'll gladly do it for ya. You can get these new fonts on the programs page.

2000.04.17 - New site layout

Well I just spent the last few hours learning a little CSS so I decided to put it to some use. I hope you like the new layout. I haven't worked on K-Edit since the 4th, but hopefully I'll get something done this week.

2000.04.02 - TxtView updated for TI-83(+)

Hey all, TxtView has just been updated to version 1.52 for the TI-83 and v1.53 for the 83+. This new version fixes a problem with the calculator locking up if it APDs, however it will still crash if you press [2nd]+[ON] while in TxtView. Thanks to Joe Flint and HawkEye for telling me about the bugs.

2000.03.13 - New Void Productions web site

Hey, check out the brand new Void Productions web site! You'll find all the latest information about Sam Heald's, Derrick Ward's, Ahmed El-Hewl's, Harper Maddox's, Wouter Demuynck's, and my own programming projects. There are some art contests too, and anyone who is good at art I strongly encourage to contact Sam for a position in Void. Thanks!

2000.02.20 - It's been a while, hasn't it?

A bunch of things have cropped up recently so here goes...
First of all, TxtView v1.51 for SOS has tied for second to last place in ticalc.org's January Program of the Month Awards! W00h00! TxtView narrowly lost out to first place Mars Patrol v2.0 by a mere 21 votes! Congratulations to the lucky guy who did vote for my program! In fact, I thought so highly of him that I put up a dedicated page in his honor. :)
On a more serious note, I've joined Sam Heald's programming group, the Void Productions. There's a lot of talent in this group, so keep checking in on us, because there will be good things coming in the future.
Third, I did some decent work on K-Edit. I added the ability to move left and right one word the other day (like if you press Ctrl+Right or Ctrl+Left in Notepad), but I still need to make an input routine and an options menu. Right now I'm also working on Txt28xp so that Sam can port TxtView to the 85 and 86 for me. Hopefully that will be done soon.
Lastly, I've done a lot of minor cosmetic changes to the site, such as the About page and the Chinese counter. I think the counter looks pretty cool, even if I can't read the numbers.
Okay, that was kind of a lot for one day. Maybe I should post more often, eh? :)

2000.01.13 - Small update to D_ZC_STR routines

Hi, sorry for the lack of updates, but I've had so much homework lately, it's been a little overwhelming. I haven't been able to get much programming done either. K-Edit is slowly moving forward, but it's hard to find time to just sit down and go at it for a while. I think I'm gonna target it for the Crash 2000 shell anyway.
Well I did slightly optimize my D_ZC_STR routines. It's only two bytes, but it's in the main loop, so it'll save some clocks too. The new zip is on the programs page.

1999.12.31 - TxtView released for SOS and Ion!

Thanks to Sam Heald, two TI-83 versions of TxtView have been released. You can get them on the programs page, or at ticalc.org. Thanks Sam!

1999.12.30 - Yet another final version of TxtView :P

Well, I goofed. I made a dumb mistake in the last version of TxtView so here's another update. Hopefully this will once and for all fix all those problems that were causing TxtView to not properly detect text files on the calculator.
In other news, Sam Heald (Evil Sam) has finished the 83 ports. An Ion and SOS version of TxtView should be out shortly.

1999.12.25 - Final version of TxtView released (and Merry Christmas)!

Okay, I just uploaded TxtView v1.5. This will be the final version of TxtView. All I did was fix a problem with the file detection routine and cleaned up the source code so that others may possibly learn from it. From now on, I will only be working on K-Edit.
Oh yes, and to anyone and everyone out there - Merry Christmas. :)

1999.12.24 - New redirector service and other stuff

I got a new url today: http://kouri.cjb.net/. Unlike go.to, cjb.net doesn't display any nasty ads on your screen before redirecting you to your site. Kudos to them.
In site news, I redid the links a little. Now there's a brief description for each link, whoopie-doo :)
In programming news, I've done more work on K-Edit (formerly TxtEdit). I've got a cursor working that you can move around the screen to browse through your file, and I made it so that Home brings you to the beginning of the line and End puts you at the end of the line. [2nd]+Home and [2nd]+End will bring you to the beginning and end of the file, respectively. Now I just have to get the input routines and the dynamic memory allocation routines figured out. :)

1999.12.15 - New archive on programs page

I just uploaded the assembly routines that I used in TxtView to display characters and strings in my custom fonts. You can get them on the programs page, or at ticalc.org.
In other news, I haven't worked on TxtView lately, but I have been working on TxtEdit! :) Yup, I finally got started on that. It's gonna take a while to do, but I have time. Too bad winter break is only two weeks for me. :(

1999.12.04 - Stuff

Hmm, let's see, where should I begin? I made a new readme file for TxtView (it's in the zip on the programs page), I made slight changes to my getKey tutorial, and I put a new link on the links page. Also, I am looking for a better background graphic for these pages. If you can think of one, please e-mail it to me or let me know where I can find it. Thanks.

1999.11.29 - New TxtView and page layout!

I'm finally done with TxtView 1.4 (I hope)! I went and fixed all the bugs in the up/down routines, took out the save feature, and optimized as much as I could. It now stands at a tidy 2301 bytes. Hopefully Evil Sam will be able to get the 83 port done pretty quickly, and then I can release them both to ticalc.org, TI-Files, and Dimension-TI. Well, go to the programs page and download it already! :)
Oh yeah, and I updated the website a little. I kinda like it, but was the old one better? Tell me what you think. :)

1999.11.26

I'm home for the holidays, but that doesn't mean I can't program! :) I wrote some code which will hopefully fix those up/down scrolling bugs, but I also discovered a bug in the save state routine! This isn't really a bug, just an oversight on my part. The 82's VAT likes to move its contents around a lot, so you can't just save a program's address and expect it to be the same later. As a result, I may have to remove the save state feature until I implement a better file detection routine. Guess I'll just have to put that on my "to do" list.
In other news, I added another link on the links page. Everyone go check out The Void Productions! :)

1999.11.24

Fixed a small bug in the save state routine. New zip is on the programs page. Hopefully I'll get around to addressing the up/down bugs soon and maybe work out the problems with the file detection routine, which is pretty poor. Oh yeah, and Evil Sam is doing the 83 port now. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. :)

1999.11.15

I added some more screenshots to the programs page. Right now there's one for each calculator program, but I'll be adding more later. I don't think I'll put up screenshots for the non-calculator programs though. They don't really need them.

1999.11.14

I made a small update to TxtView today. I added a "save state" feature, which is kind of like a bookmark. If you're viewing a file and for some reason you want to quickly exit to the TI-OS, you just press Y= and it'll save your place in the file, so that the next time you run TxtView it will bring you right back to the place where you left off. Could be useful. Anyway, the new zip (it's still version 1.4, btw) is up on the programs page, along with a little animated screenshot I made of the main menu. I'll add more pics later. Enjoy!

1999.10.29

What's this? Two consecutive days of updating? Wow! I can hardly contain my excitement, can't you? :P Well the only things I did was fix a broken link on the links page and give my article on Uses of the getKey Function it's own dedicated page.

1999.10.28

Yay, I finally got tabs working, more or less. There are a few bugs, but they won't crash your calculator. For example, when word wrap is enabled and you are viewing long lines with tabs in them, up and down will scroll the screen more than one line. This shouldn't be too hard to fix though. Also, I am not sure of this, but if a tab is within the first 7 characters of a line, scrolling left or right may not display correctly. I am sure I will be able to fix this soon also. The other thing I did was rewrite Txt282p so that now you can specify the name of the output file on the command line. Joy! All of the new files have been posted in the programs section for your downloading pleasure. Note that TxtView 1.4 is still in beta form though, so use at your own risk. Enjoy!

1999.10.25

Nothing really new here. Just trying to get in the habit of updating every week at least. The only thing I've done lately besides homework has been to work on rewriting Txt282p. The code's a real mess right now (not that it wasn't before), but when I'm done it should be a lot faster (trivial though, really) and have some more features, such as the ability to specify the name of the output file (that's been bothering me for a while). Okay, that's the end of the news.

1999.10.17

No, I haven't done any programming yet. My free time is mostly wasted playing Half-Life or Quake 3. :) I'm thinking that once I stop being lazy I'm going to work on making TxtView into a text editor, so it will be a little more useful to people, including me.
The only changes to the site I've done so far have been to move some of the older news to the old news page, and I removed a link from the links page, because the site hadn't been updated in ages. Once I get some programming done, I'll do an update to the programs page, I promise.

1999.09.29

Well I just moved in to my dorm room here at UC Davis. It's pretty cool. Things have been pretty hectic lately so I haven't been able to get any programming done. The only things I've been working on are getting tabs to work right in TxtView, but this has been more difficult than I imagined. I also changed the format of the TxtView files back to 2 signiture bytes. And I added a link to the links page. I'll post another update when I've made some real progress.

1999.09.16

You can now use the url go.to/kouri/ to be redirected to this site. This is just to make things simpler and also in case I ever decide to have my site hosted elsewhere. Right now my settings are set so that you will see a delay page before it redirects you, but I could change this so that it creates a pop-up window instead. Would this be a good idea? Please tell me.
In TxtView news, I've changed the format for TxtView files to use three "signiture" bytes instead of two. This will cause an incompatibility problem with older 82p files created with Txt282p, but I don't think this is too major since you can just convert the same file again using the updated version of Txt282p and it'll be fine. With some other optimizations, this small addition adds a hefty one byte to the total program size, bringing it to 2280 bytes. OBD says he's coming along fine with the 83 port. He just has to make sure it works with the 83+ now. Everything is looking pretty good folks. :)

1999.09.14

While I'm waiting for OBD to get the port done, I optimized yet another byte off of TxtView. Whoopie-doo. So now it's at 2279 bytes. Anyway, the port is taking longer than expected, and I have no clue when it will be finished.
Does anyone think I should keep an archive of TxtView files on this site to be downloaded? Stuff like Physics notes or English vocab might be handy. What do you think? Send me an e-mail.

1999.09.11

I forgot, in my stupidity, that 82p files can be sent to the 83 without any trouble so there is no reason for me to write Txt283p. I did anyway tho, just so people wouldn't have to rename their programs with an .83p extension. What can I say, I'm bored. However I would encourage people to use Txt282p anyway so that the files can be sent to either the 82 or the 83.
Anyway, the 83 version of TxtView is going to be programmed for the ION shell, so that it'll run on the 83+ too. It should all be done within the next couple of days. Exciting stuff, eh? Yeah I know. :P

1999.09.08

Another one of those after-midnight updates. Today I optimized a whole two bytes out of TxtView, then uploaded the new zip, just for kicks. I could change the version number to 1.41 or something like that but then I'd lose another byte, so what would be the point?
I think it's time to just release the sucker and get it over with. Mark May (1BigDoofus on ICQ) is working on the TI-83 port. He's pretty much done, so I have to write an 83 version of Txt282p. Shouldn't be too difficult. Well, that's enough for now.

1999.09.07

Time for another update. Today I worked on TxtView, my TI-82 program which allows you to view text files on your calculator simply and easily. Version 1.4 is almost done, but I need more feedback first. New in this version is the ability to change the default font used by TxtView to a font that looks exactly the 4x6 DOS font that you can use in Windows. It's not as nice as the default font, IMHO, but you decide. I also increased the font size to 4x6 pixels so that extended ASCII characters would look better. Go check out the programs section for more info on TxtView.
In other news, I changed a few links, and moved the news from last month to its own section. I don't know why you'd want to read it, but the link is below anyway.
*UPDATE* Whoops, the TxtView.zip file I had uploaded before didn't correctly swich fonts. I fixed it, so now it'll work. Sorry 'bout that.

1999.08.23

Gee, has it been almost three weeks already? Well I guess with all these hits I've been getting and all that other busy stuff I do, I just lost track of time. Ahem. Well anyway, I thought it was time for an update, so I wrote all this crap right here. Yay.

1999.08.11

Changed the color scheme a little. Links should turn orange when you move your mouse over them. Now if that isn't news worth writing about then I don't know what is. On another note, it's been a whole day and no one other than me has signed my guestbook yet. I guess I don't pay my friends enough. :P

1999.08.10

Created a Guestbook for everyone (hah!) to sign. Also added Kat's Page to the Links section. She's a good friend of mine, so go check it out, k? Uh, that's all. I guess I'll go sign my guestbook now. :P

1999.08.07

Hmm, the site is looking a little better. Added a lot of programs to the programs section and graphics to the links section. Also, clicking on a link should open it in a new window.

1999.08.05

Added a counter to each page, thank you 123counter! Also updated a couple links. I guess they didn't work after all. :(

1999.08.04

Added the Programs section. If you're into C and/or Z80 assembly programming, check it out, cuz I include source with all my programs. Also added a few links.

1999.08.03

Yay, finally started my own homepage. It looks like crap, but at least the links work. Hmm, maybe this was a bad idea...
